Probably, high production can indicate high yoghurt consumption from residents of each of these countries. There is a positive correlation between production and consumption.

In general, yoghurt is a food produced by fermenting milk. This fermentation process is assisted by the presence of bacteria that produce lactic acid. Some of the bacteria used are Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus bacteria. Both types of bacteria will break down lactose (milk sugar) into lactic acid and various aroma and taste components. Lactobacillus bulgaricus is more involved in the formation of aroma, while Streptococcus thermophilus is more involved in the formation of the flavor of yoghurt.

Based on the Worldwide statistics of FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the world’s production of yoghurt has increased from time to time. In 2000, the world’s yoghurt production is just 30 thousand tons. In 2021, after more than 20 years, the world’s production had jumped to 4.5 million tons.

Based on Continent regions, the production of Yoghurt still be dominated by Europe region. Basically, the europe region produced 3.9 million tons, followed by asia with output around 220 thousand tons. Menawhile, america and africa have minor production with output 17 thousand tons, and 3.4 thosand tons, respectively.

1.Germany        

Germany still became the world’s biggest producer of Yoghurt in 2021. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database, the production of Yoghurt from Germany reached 851,070 tons. Some of the popular yoghurt product in Germany are Berlin frozen yoghurt upstart and Wonderpots. 


2.Russian Federation    

Russia is the 2nd biggest producer of Yoghurt in 2021. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Yoghurt from Russia reached 544,501 tons. In this country there are some yoghurt brands. Some of them are PROSTOKVASHINO, Pavels Yoghurt, Activia yoghurt is one of the most pospular yoghurt brand in Russia.


3.France            

France is the 3rd biggest producer of Yoghurt in 2021. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Yoghurt from France reached 450,930 tons. In this country, Danone is the major yoghurt player in France. One of the most popular yoghurt brands is Activia.


4.Belarus           

Belarus is the 4th biggest producer of Yoghurt in 2021. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Yoghurt from Belarus reached 317,234 tons.


5.Poland            

Poland is the next biggest producer of Yoghurt in 2021. Based on FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the yoghurt production from Poland reached 269,090 tons. In Polad, there are some popular yoghurt brands. Some of them are Danio, Danonki, Monte, Activia, and Jogobella.


6.Spain

Spain is the 6th biggest producer of Yoghurt in 2021. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Yoghurt from Spain reached 235,390 tons.  Some of yoghurt brand in Spian are Yolado, Las 2 Vacas. Furthermore, in this country, there are llaollao.  llaollao is a Spanish frozen yoghurt franchise brand founded in Denia in the province of Alicante, Spain.


7. Greece            

Greece is the 8th biggest producer of Yoghurt in 2021. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Yoghurt from Greece reached 201,090 tons. In Grecce, there are some yoghurt brands. In 2021, the national production of Yoghurt from Sweden reached 141 thousand tons. In Sweden, there is Filmjölk. Basically, Filmjölk is a mesophilic yogurt which was produced by Arla Foods, Falköpings Mejeri, Gefleortens Mejeri, Norrmejerier, and Skånemejerier. Functionally, filmjölk is ussualy eaten with breakfast cereal, muesli or crushed crisp bread on top.


10. Netherlands

Netherlands also has a large amount of Yoghurt in 2021. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the yoghurt production from Netherlands reached 132 thousand tons. In Netherlands, there are some companies producing yoghurt including FAGE, Zuivelmaatschappij, Zuivelhoeve, and Holland Dairy.
