10 World’s Biggest Producers of Blackberry Fruits- According to “Worldwide blackberry production” published by Strik et al., 2007, there are 10 World’s Biggest Producers of Blackberry Fruits. Basically, this fruit is one of the world’s popular fruits in the world’s with usually has sour and slightly sweet taste.  This data was the very old, but I will update the data if we has founding the data from the trustworthy institution.

Blackberry (Rubus spp.) is a perennial shrubby fruit tree of Rubus, which has been planted for more than 100 years (Kaume et al., 2012).  Taxonomically, Blackberry can be included into Clade: Rosids; Order: Rosales; Family: Rosaceae; Genus: Rubus. Due to blackberry was included into Rosaceae family, this plant has close relatioship with including various edible fruits, namely apples (Malus domestica), pears (Pyrus L.), quinces (C. oblonga), apricots, plums, cherries, peaches (P. persica), raspberries, loquats (Eriobotrya japonica), strawberries, rose hips, hawthorns, and almonds (Prunus dulcis). Furthermore, the family also includes popular ornamental trees and shrubs, such as roses (Rosa L.), meadowsweets, rowans, firethorns, and photinias.

Statistically, based on the continent regions, the main areas of blackberry cultivation areas are located in some regions. Europe, North America, and Asia are among the biggest three producers of Blackberry. The production of Blackberry fruits from Europe, North America, and Asia are 43 thousand tons, 53 thousand tons, and 26 thousand tons, respectively. Meanwhile South America and Oceania can produce around 6 thousand and 3 thousand tons, respectively. Based on the harvested areas of Blackberry, Europe and North America have the biggest harvested areas of Blackberries with total areas around 7.6 thousand hectare and 7.1 thousand hectares.

1.United States of America        

United States of America (USA) is the biggest producer of Blackberry Fruits in 2005. The production of Blackberry fruits from Abraham Lincoln’s country reached 31,840 megagrams/ tons.  Geographically, in USA, there are some main production areas of Blackberry in this Country. Some of them are located in Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, and the Canadian province of British Columbia), Michigan, and Arkansas (Andersen and Crocker, 2001). Based on the genotypes, there are some cultivars of Blackberry in USA. Some of the cultivars are Kiowa, Arapaho, Shawnee, Navaho, Chickasaw, and Apache Oklawaha, Flordagrand, and Brazos (Andersen and Crocker, 2001).

2.Mexico           

Mexico also has huge production of Blackberry fruits in 20005. Statistically, the production of Blackberry fruit from Mexico reached 26,985 megagrams/ tons. Geographically, in Mexico, the main production areas of Blackberry can be found in some states. Michoacán is the main blackberry producing state, contributing 93.3% to the national Mexico production of blackberry, followed by Jalisco contributing 5.0% and Colima in third place with 0.9%.

3.China              

China is the biggest producer of Blackberry from Asia regions and became 3rd world’s biggest producer. Statistically, in 2005, the production of Blackberry fruits from China reached 26,350 megagrams/ tons. Based on Cultivars In China, some of cultivar of Blackberry are Kiowa, Hull Thornless, Chester Thornless and Triple Crown (Wu et al., 2023).

4.Serbia             

Serbia is the biggest producer of Blackberry from Europe region and 4th World’s biggest producer. Statistically, the production of Blackberry fruits from Serbia achieved 25,000 megagrams/ tons. in this country, the production areas of Blackberry are concentrated West Serbia. Based on Cultivars, there are some kind of blackberries that planted in this country. Some of the Blackberry’s cultivars that can be found in Serbia are Tornfree, Čačak thornfree, and Loch Ness.

5.Hungary         

Hungary also has huge production of Blackberry fruits in 2005. The production of fruit from this country reached 12,000 megagrams/ tons. Some of the cultivars in Hungary are Arapaho, Čačanska Bestrna, Dirksen, and Hull Thornless (Denes and Kollanyi, 1998).


6.Chile 

Chile is the 6th largest producer of Blackberry fruits in 2005. Commonly, the production of chile’s blackberry fruits reached 3,879 Megagrams/ tons. Basically, Chile had become a major supplier of fresh berries for off-season in the northern hemisphere (Finn and Clarke, 2011).

7.New Zealand 

New Zealand is the 7th world’s biggest producer of Blackberry in 2005. Basically, the production of blackberry from New Zealand reached 3,350 Megagrams/ tons. In New Zealand, the main production areas of Blackberry can be found in Manawatu, Waikato, Nelson, Otago, and Auckland. Based on the varieties of blackberry, the main varieties of blackberry in New Zealand are Smoothstem, Thronfree, Loch Ness, Dirksen Thornless, and Black Satin (Pennycook, 1998). 

8.Costa Rica      

Costa Rica also has huge production of Blackberry fruits in 2005. Overall, in 2005, the production of Blackberry from Costa Rica reached 1,500 Megagrams/ tons. Geographically, in Costa Rica, blackberry ditributes in the provinces of San José and Cartago (Strik et al., 2007). Commonly, The blackberry cultivar that can be found in COsta Rica are”wine” and “criolla” (Peraza-Padilla  and Orozco-Aceves, 2018).

9.Ecuador          

Ecuador is the 9th largest producer of Blackberry in 2005. The production of Blackberry from Ecuador reached 1,290 Megagrams/ tons. Commonly, based on the cultivar, the blackberry cultivar that can be found in Costa Rica are Castilla, Andimora, Colombiana, and Brazos (Iza et al., 2020). Geograhically, In Ecuador, blackberry growing areas takes place in the valleys of the inter-Andean alley and in the foothills of the Sierra, in the provinces of Tungurahua, Cotopaxi, Imbabura, Pichincha, Chimborazo, and Bolívar (Jácome et al. 2016)

10. Brazil           

Brazil is the next biggest producer of Blackberry in 2005. Basically, the production of Blackberry from Brazil reached 780 Megagrams/ tons. In Brazil, some of blackberry cultivars that can be found are ‘Brazos’, ‘Guarani’, ‘Tupy’ and ‘Xavante’ (Oliviera et al., 2017).
