10 World’s Biggest Producers of Cherries- According to FAOSTAT Database, there 10 World’s Biggest Producers of Cherries in 2021. Basically, Cherries is one of the favourites fruits and many people fond of these fruits.  A cherry is the fruit of many plants of the genus Prunus and many types of cherries.There are Bing Cherries, Rainier Cherries, Black Cherries, Van Cherries, Sweetheart Cherries, Lambert Cherries, Santina and others type of cherries.

Based on Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS), this plant can be classified into Subdivision: spermatophytes; Class: Magnoliopsida; Superorder: Rosanae; Order: Rosales; Family: Rosaceae; Genus: Prunus L. Due to its classification into Rosaceae family, cherries have close relationship with including various edible fruits, namely apples (Malus domestica), pears (Pyrus L.), quinces (Cydonia oblonga), raspberries, blackberries (Rubus subg. Rubus), strawberries (F. × ananassa), Peach (Prunus persica) and almonds (Prunus dulcis).

According to FAOSTAT in 2021, the world’s production of Cherries has increased from time to time. Statistically, the world’s production of Berries in 1980 around 1.2 million tons with harvested areas around 167 thousand hectares. Meanwhile in 2021, the world’s production of cherries around 2.7 million tons with harvested areas around 451 thousand hectares. Based the productivity/ yield, the yield of cherries around 4 tons/ hectare – 9 tons / hectare.

Geographically, based on the continent region, the main areas of Cherries in 2021 Asia still become main areas with production around 1,239,025 tons. Meanwhile, Europe and America have also huge production with output of cherries around 740 thousand tons and 697 thousand tons, respectively.

Brief Description of 10 World’s Biggest Producers of Cherries

1.Türkiye           

Türkiye still become the biggest producer of Cherries in 2021. According to FAOSTAT, the production of Cherries from Türkiye reached 689,834 tons. Geographically, there are some main growing areas of cherries in Türkiye. Commonly, Afyon, Manisa, Konya, Isparta, Amasya are some of the main areas in cherry production at Türkiye (Bal and Cercinli., 2013). Based on cultivars, there are some cultivars that commonly cultivated in Turkiye. Some of them are Belge, Bing, Dalbasti, Durona di Cesena, Lambert, Merton Late, Starks Gold, Summit, Sweetheart, Van, Vista, and 0–900 Ziraat (Hayaloglu et al., 2015).

2.United States of America        

The United States of America still become the 2nd biggest producer of of Cherries in 2021. According to FAOSTAT, the production of Cherries from USA achieved 343,190 tons. Geographically, according to Statista in 2021, the main production areas of Cherry in USA can be located in Michigan with production of cherries around 96 million pounds, Utah with 33 million Pounds, and Winconsin with production around 10.5 million tons. In United States of America (USA), there are some cultivars of Cherries. Some of them are Bing, Chinook, Van, VIsta, Larian, Sam, Jubilee, Tulare, Index, King, Chelan, Early Coral, Early Burlat, Brooks, Skeena (Struss et al., 2003).

3.Chile 

Chile is the 3rd biggest producer of Cherries in 2021. According to FAOSTAT, the production of Cherries from Chile reached 325,049 tons. Based on genotype, there are some popular cultivars of Cherry in Chile, namely Bing, Van, Early Burlat and Lambert (Lemus and Valenzuela., 2005).  Based on CLimate, the harvesting time of cherry occurs between October and January. Geograhically, the areas of Cherry prpoduction are divided into 2 zones. Firstly, the northern-central zone, included the Valparaíso, Metropolitana, and Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins regions. Secondly, the southern-central zone, included the Maule, Bio-Bio, and Ñuble regions (Rojas et al., 2021).

4.Uzbekistan    

Uzbekistan is the 4th largest producer of Cherries in 2021. Statistically, the production of Cherries from Uzbekistan reached 213,600 tons. Geographically, in this country. one of the main cultivation areas of Cherries are located in Namangan Region. Based on processed of the products, Cherry from Uzbekistan can be processed into Juices, Dried Foods, Jams, Canned Foods, Frozen Foods. 

5.Iran (Islamic Republic of)        

Iran also has huge production of Cherries in 2021. Based on the FAOSTAT, the production of Cherries from Iran reached 156,134 tons. Based on the genotype, there are some popular cultivars that cultivated in Iran. Siah-Mashhad’, ‘Takdaneh-Mashhad’, ‘Shabestar’, ‘Siah-Daneshkade’, ‘Ghazvin’ and ‘Droongezna’ are recommended for fresh consumption. Furthermore, Cultivars of ‘Dirres-Italia’, ‘Dirres-Pardis’, ‘Maremoot’, ‘Abardeh’ and ‘Rorshon’ are suitable for processing cherries (Khadivi-Khub., 2014).

6.Spain

Spain is the 6th biggest producer of Cherries in 2021. According to FAOSTAT, the production of Cherries from Spain reached 125,810 tons.  Geographically, in Spain, there are 4 major production areas, namely Extremadura contributing around 32% of national production, Aragón-Catalonia (34%), Andalusia (10%) and Valencia (9%) (Perez., 2001). Commonly, there are some cultivars of cherry that commonly cultivated in Spain. Some of them are Bulat, Ramon Olive, Van, Sumburst, Summit, Sweetheart, and Picotas (Sanchez., 2010).

7.Italy  

Italy is the 7th biggest producer of Cherries in 2021. Statistically, the production of cherries from Spain reached 93,030 tons. In Italy, Cherry can be found in some areas. Some of them located in Valpolicella and Strada del Soave (Veneto), Vignola (Emilia Romagna), and Pecetto (Piedmont).

8.Greece            

Greece is the 8th biggest producer of Cherries in 2021. According to FAOSTAT, the production of Cherries from Greece reached 80,740 tons.  In Greece, some cultivation areas of Cherry can be found in Pella, Imathia, and Pieria. Genetically, some of the cultivars of cherry from Greece are Bigarreau Burlat, Lapins,Adriana, Ferrovia, Regina, Kordia, Bakirtzeika and Germersdorfer (Kazantzis et al., 2011)

9.Ukraine          

Ukraine also has a large number of cherries in 2021. According to FAOSTAT, the production of Cherries from Ukraine reached 61,850 tons. Geograhically, in Ukraine, one of the main regions of Ukrainian’s sweet cherries are grown in the Zaporizhia region. Based on Genotypes, there are some cultivars of Cherries from Ukraine. Some of the cultivars are Dillemma, Bajka, Elektra, Prestizna, Talizman, Letniskowa and Anons (Głowacka et al., 2013).

10.Poland          

Poland is the Europe region country that has huge production of Cherries in 2021. Statistically, the production of Cherries from Poland reached 59,100 tons. Based on cultivars, there are some popular cherry in Poland. Some of the cherry in Poland are Vanda, Rainier, Regina and Lapins (Rozpara., 2005)
