Historically, this bank was founded in 1998 due to the merger among four banks, namely Bank Bumi Daya, Bank Dagang Negara, Bank Ekspor Impor Indonesia, and Bank Pembangunan Indonesia.

Liem Sioe Liong initiated the establishment of this bank. He is also the

Bank BTPN is the Indonesian Bank that was founded on October 6th,
1959, under the name “PT Bank Pegawai Retired Military” (Bapemil). In the
beginning, this bank only accepted deposits and provided loans to military
retirees. Until, In 1960, this bank received permission to operate as a
commercial bank. In 1986, this bank changed its name to “PT Bank Tabungan
Pensiunan Nasional”. In 2018, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation owned this
