Historically, this bank was founded in 1998 due to the merger among four banks, namely Bank Bumi Daya, Bank Dagang Negara, Bank Ekspor Impor Indonesia, and Bank Pembangunan Indonesia.

Historically, Liem Sioe Liong initiated the establishment of this bank. He is also the founder of Indofood Group. Because of the financial crisis in 1997-1998, Indofood Group/ Salim group sold this bank to Governments to rejuvenate the financial conditions. To Date, Group Djarum owned this bank.
