15 World’s Biggest Country Producers of Blueberries – According to the FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT) in 2026, there were 15 World’s Biggest Country Producers of Blueberries in 2024. Basically, this plant has many uses for human health and many people in the world consume these fruits. Morphologically, the blueberry is a perennial flowering shrub plant with the origin of the plant is thought to be South American, and estimates of species numbers range from 150 to 450 (Retamales and Hancock, 2018).

Taxonomically, Blueberries can be included into some biological aspects Subdivision: Spermatophyta; Class: Magnoliopsida; Superorder: Asteranae; Order: Ericales; Family: Ericaceae; Genus: Vaccinium L. Because it was included in the Ericaceae family, blueberries have close relationship with cranberries (Vaccinium subg. Oxycoccus), Rhododendron, Vitis-idaea (lingonberry), Myrtillus (bilberry), and others. Commonly, most blueberry fruit production comes from cultivars derived from Vaccinium corymbosum L. (highbush blueberry), Vaccinium virgatum Ait. (rabbiteye blueberry; syn. V. ashei Reade) and Vaccinium angustifolium Ait. (lowbush blueberry) (Retamales and Hancock, 2018).

In 1961, the world’s production of blueberries reached 35 thousand tons with world harvested areas around 3 thousand hectares (ha). Meanwhile, after more than 60 years, precisely in 2024, the world’s production of blueberries increased to 1.39 million tons with world’s harvested areas around 197 thousand hectares (ha). Meanwhile, the yield of blueberries also increased from 2.96 tons/hectares (t/ha) in 1969 and became 7.05 tons / hectares in 2024.

The Americas can produce 1,098,931 tons. Meanwhile, Europe can produce around 204,168 tons. 1.United States of America

The United States of America still became the world’s biggest country producer of Blueberries in 2024. According to the FAO Statistical Database in 2026, the USA’s Blueberries production reached 401,970 tons in 2024. Genetically, there are some varieties of blueberry cultivated in the United States. These varieties are lowbush, northern highbush, southern highbush, rabbiteye, and half-high.

Geographically, based on the USDA database in 2024, there are some states in the USA that have become the main production areas of Blueberries. Some of the states are Georgia with 21 thousand acres of harvested area, Michigan with 20 thousand acres of harvested area, Washington with 16 thousand acres of harvested area, Oregon with 13 thousand acres, North Carolina with 8 thousand acres, California with 7 thousand acres, and Florida with 5 thousand acres. As of 2026, the United States remains a global leader in both production and consumption contributing nearly USD 9.1 billion annually to the U.S. economy.

   

2.Peru

Peru became the 2nd world’s biggest country producer of Blueberries in 2024. According to the FAO Statistical Database (FAOSTAT) in 2026, the production of Blueberries from Peru reached 353 thousand tons. In fact, for the 2025/2026 season, the export forecasts project volumes of Blueberries from Peru are more than 370,000 to 400,000 metric tons, making Peru's critical role in the global supply chain of Blueberries. Geographically, Blueberry production in Peru can be found in several regions including La Libertad, Lambayeque, Ica, Lima / Ancash. Specifically, La Libertad still became the main region of Blueberries production areas contributing around 48% of Peru's national production of blueberries, followed by Lambayeque contributing around 24% of Peru's Blueberries, Ica with contribution of 14% and Lima / Ancash with contribution less than 10%. In terms of genetic aspects, there are some popular cultivated blueberries in Peru and Ventura and Biloxi are some popular varieties cultivated in Peru.

 

3.Canada

Canada also became one of the world’s largest country producers of Blueberries in 2024. According to FAO Statistical Database (FAOSTAT) in 2026, the production of Blueberries from Canada reached 165,608 tons. Commonly, in Canada, some types of Blueberries are Lowbush Blueberries and Highbush Blueberries. Geographically, the main cultivation area of Lowbush is located in Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. Meanwhile, the cultivation area of Highbush is located mostly in British Columbia, contributing around 95% of Canada's highbush production. As a nation which has one of the world's highest per-capita consumers of blueberries, Canada must import heavily from Peru, Mexico, and Chile to fulfill the huge demand of Blueberry Consumption during the winter season.

 

4.Chile

Chile is the 4th world’s biggest country producer of Blueberries and remains one of the world's top blueberry exporters in 2024. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT) in 2026, the production of blueberries from Chile reached 97,219 tons. Geographically, in Chile, the growing areas of Blueberries located in Maule, Ñuble, Bío Bío, La Araucanía, Los Ríos, Los Lagos, Coquimbo, and Valparaíso but the main growing areas which bigger production of Blueberries than others can be found in Maule, Ñuble, and Bío Bío. Genetically, in Chile, growers/ farmers are usually planting some varieties of Blueberries like Sekoya Pop, Magnífica, O’Neal, Duke, and Legacy. Based on climatic conditions, the peak harvesting time of Blueberries occurs in December and January.

 

5.Mexico

Mexico is the 5th World’s Biggest Country Producer of Blueberries in 2024. According to the FAO Statistical Corporate Database in 2024, the production of Mexico’s Blueberries reached 80,544 tons. Geographically, Major blueberry production area concentrated in the state of Jalisco, Michoacán, and Sinaloa. Of these growing states above, Jalisco still becomes the largest contributor with around 50% of Peru’s Blueberry. Furthermore, some minor areas of blueberries in Mexico are located in Guanajuato, Baja California, and Puebla.

   

6.Poland

Poland also became one of the world’s biggest country producers of Blueberries especially in highbush from Europe Nations. According to the FAO Statistical Database (FAOSTAT) in 2026, the production of Poland’s Blueberries reached 62,00 tons. This country is still the biggest producer and exporter of Blueberry. Specifically, Poland exports 30–40% of its blueberry production to other countries. Agronomically, The High-Bush Blueberry is one of the types of blueberries that are planted in Poland with some of the cultivated blueberry’s varieties/ cultivars in Poland are Bluecrop, Duke, Chandler, Aurora & Liberty.

 

7. Spain

Besides Poland, Spain also has huge production of Blueberries and become one of the biggest country producers of Blueberries from Europe Nations in 2024. According to the FAO Statistical Corporate Database in 2026, the production of Blueberries from Matador country reached 60,9500 tons. Geographically, the production of Spanish Blueberries comes from Andalusia with the Province of Huelva still the biggest area of cultivation contributing approximately more than 90% of Spain’s total blueberry production. Furthermore, the smaller areas of blueberries production can be found in Northern Spain (Asturias, Galicia, Cantabria). In terms of genetic aspects, Rocio, Victory, or Spring High, Star, Ventura, and Snowchaser are some of the popular varieties of Blueberries cultivated in Spain. Caused by climatic conditions, the harvesting Peak Season of Blueberries in Spain occurs in March to May.

 

8.Morocco         

Morocco is the world’s biggest country producer of Blueberries from the African Region in 2024. Statistically, the production of Morocco’s Blueberries reached 53,751 tons. Geographically, in Morocco, some cultivation areas of Blueberries can be found in Loukos Gharb, Agadir in the center-north and Dakhla to the south. In terms of genetic aspects, some main varieties grown and cultivated in Morocco are Kirra, Coria, Rocio, Sekoya Pop, Atlas, Dupree, Ventura, Jupiter, Sekoya, and Corrina.

 

9.Australia

Australia has huge production of blueberries in 2024. Based on the Data from FAO Statistical Database (FAOSTAT) in 2026, total production of Blueberries from Australia reached 27,540 tons. In terms of Geographical aspects, the cultivation of blueberries from Australia spread across diverse geographic regions—from the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland to North-West Tasmania.

 

10.Portugal

Portugal is the 10th biggest producer in 2024. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT) in 2026, the production of Blueberries from Portugal reached 22,850 tons in 2024. Geographically, the blueberries cultivation areas in Portugal can be found in several regions such as Alentejo, Odemira and the Tagus Valley.

 

11.Germany

Germany is the 11th biggest producer in 2024. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT) in 2026, the production of Blueberry from Germany reached 15,090 tons. Geographically, Lower Saxony is the center of German blueberry cultivation, and more than 70 percent of national production comes from this bundesland. Furthermore, beside Lower Saxony, the blueberries growing areas can be found in Potsdam-Mittelmark. Agronomically, in Germany, the harvest season of blueberries runs from late June to September and experiencing the peak time in July and August. Geographically, in Italy, the main cultivation areas of blueberries in Italy are concentrated in Trentino, Piedmont (Cuneo), Lombardy (Valtellina), and Veneto (Verona). In Italy, some popular blueberry varieties are Northern Varieties: Duke, Draper, Bluecrop, Liberty, and Ventura. In terms of climatic conditions in Italy, the peak time of blueberries harvesting runs from June to August.

Geographically, in the Netherlands, the cultivation areas of Blueberries can be found in the Limburg province. Related to genetic aspects, in the Netherlands, Farmers or Growers planted some of the Blueberry’s varieties such as Bluecrop, Duke, Liberty, Draper, and Aurora.

 

 

15. Romania

Statistically, according to the FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT) in 2026, the production of Romanian’s blueberries reached 5,000 tons. Geographically, in Roma the major plantation region of Blueberries can be found in Transylvania with 319.7 hectares (ha), followed by Muntenia with 120.9 hectares (ha) and Maramures with 79.4 hectares (ha). Furthermore, some minor cultivation areas of Blueberries in Romania can be found in Moldova with 39.2 hectares (ha), Crisana with 34 hectares (ha), Banat with 29.6 hectares (ha), Oltenia with 25.4 hectares (ha) and Bucovina 2 hectares (ha) (Asănică et al., 2016). Genetically, some blueberries can be found in Rumania, namely Duke, Bluecrop, Elliott, Aurora, Liberty.
