In 1961, the world’s production of grapes was around 42.9 million tons with harvested areas around 9.3 million hectares (ha). Meanwhile in 2024, the world’s production of grapes reached 75.9 million tons with harvested areas around 6.7 million hectares. From 1980 to 2024, the World’s harvested areas of grapes declined from 9.3 million hectares in 1961 and decreased to become 6.7 million hectares in 2024. Athough there is a decline in the area harvested of grapes from 1961 to 2024, the yield of grapes increased from 7.21 tons/ hectare (t/ha) in 1961 and increased to 11.29 tons/ hectare (t/ha) in 2024.

1.China

China still becomes the world’s biggest grape-producing country with production reaching 16.8 million tons in 2024. Historically, thhe people of this panda country have a long history with this plant. Along with the Chinese economic revolution pioneered by Deng Xiaoping in the 1980s, which was followed by economic growth and the welfare of the people of this land of pandas getting advance, grape production has also increased. In 2000, China’s vineyard area reached 178,000 hectares.

Geographically, in China, the growing and cultivation areas of grape plants (vineyard) in China spreads over several provinces. Some of these provinces include Xingjian, Hebei, Shandong, Liaoning, and Henan. The area of ​​grape cultivation in Xinjiang is 32,000 hectares, Hebei is 31,500 hectares, Shandong is 20,900 hectares, Liaoning is 14.2 thousand hectares, and Henan is 11.3 thousand hectares. Italy is the 2nd world’s largest grape-producing country with production reaching 7.6 tons in 2024. Apart from being famous for its spaghetti and pizza, this country is also famous for the several types of grapes it produces and many grapes in Italy as a source of Italian wine. In this country, there are several types/varieties of grapes. The grape varieties include Sangiovese, which is cultivated on 54,000 hectares, Montepulciano on 27,000 hectares, Glera on 27,000 hectares, Pinot Gris on 25,000 hectares, Merlot on 24,000, and Italian for 22,000. The types above are types of wine grapes that are popular in Italy.

Geographically, several regions in Italy have become the center of grape cultivation. 4. United States of America

The United States is the fourth biggest grape producer in the world. Total production of grapes in 2024 based on data from the FAO Statistical Database (FAOSTAT) reached 4.9 million tons. Grape Cultivation areas spread over several parts of the United States such as California, New York, Washington, Oregon, and Virginia. However, of all states, California is the main grape-growing area in America, contributing to 85 percent of United States grape production.

According to the side of the cultivar/type of grape, there are several types of grapes that are popular such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Zinfandel. 7. Türkiye          

Türkiye is the 7th largest country producer of Grapes in 2024. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Grapes from Türkiye reached 3.4 million tons. Geographically, the main regions of grapes cultivation in Türkiye are distributed in several provinces. These provinces include Manisa, Mardin, Denizli, Nevsehir, Mersin, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Kilis, Kahramanmaras, and Elazig. Specifically, Manisa has a Vineyard area around 85.8 hectares (ha) or 22 % of overall grape Vineyard areas in Türkiye. Furthermore, Mardin also has a vineyard area around 36.3 hectares or 9.3 grape vineyard areas in Türkiye. Meanwhile, Denizli has 34.161 hectares, Nevşehir 18.944 hectares, Mersin 17.834 hectares, Diyarbakır 17.168 hectares, Gaziantep 16.363 hectares, Kilis 12.798 hectares, Kahramanmaraş 12.513 hectares, and Elazığ 10.8 hectares (Akdemir and Candar, 2022).

 

8. Chile
