10 World’s Biggest Country Producers of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds- According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), there are 10 World’s Biggest Producers of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds in 2022. Statistically, these countries have huge production of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds than other countries.

 Taxonomically, according to Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS), Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds can be classified into Subkingdom: Viridiplantae; Infrakingdom: Streptophyta; Superdivision: Embryophyta; Division: Tracheophyta; Subdivision: Spermatophytina; Class: Magnoliopsida; Superorder: Rosanae; Order: Cucurbitales; Family: Cucurbitaceae. Because of its classification into Cucurbitaceace family, these plants (Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds) have close relationship with Cucumber (Cucumis sativus), Melon (Cucumis melo), Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus), Bitter melon (Momordica charantia), and Chinese okra (Luffa acutangula).

 In terms of agronomic aspects, the world’s production and area harvested has shown relatively increased from 1970 to 2022. In the year of 1970, the world’s area harvested of pumpkin, squash, and gourds reached 756 thousand hectares (Ha) with total production reaching 5 million tons.  After more than 50 years, the world’s area harvested has increased reaching 1.5 million hectares (ha) with world’s production reaching 22 million tons.

Europe is in second place with production around 4.8 million tons. America is in third place with production around 3.5 million tons and Africa in fourth with 2.7 million tons.

1.China, mainland         

China still becomes the biggest country producer of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds in 2022. Statistically, the production of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds of this country reached 7,325,193 tons. Geographically, Sichuan and across the north China regions are some main production areas of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds in China. Culturally, in China, pumpkins fruits symbolize prosperity, and it can be served as dishes in Chinese New Year.

 

2.Ukraine          

Ukraine is the second world’s biggest country producer of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds in 2022. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds reached 1,097,780 tons. Agronomically, the harvest time of pumpkin happened in Autumn season. Culturally, in Ukraine, pumpkin can be processed into some dishes including pumpkin soups, pancakes, casseroles, pies, fried seeds, and pumpkin juice.

 

3.Russian Federation

4.United States of America        

The United States of America is the fourth biggest country producer of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds in 2022. Statistically, according to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds in The USA reached 1,025,777 tons. Geographically, in the United States of America, there are some states that have huge production of Pumpkin, Squash, and Guards. These states include Illinois, Texas, California, Indiana, Michigan, Virginia, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.

 

5.Spain

Spain is the fifth biggest producer of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds in 2022. Statistically, the production of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds from Spain reached 745,270 tons. Geographically, these fruits can be found in some areas in Spain. These regions include Comunidad Valenciana, Andalucia, Aragon, Extremadura, Castilla-LaMancha, and Canary Island.

 

6.Türkiye           

Türkiye is the sixth biggest country producer of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds in 2022. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds reached 744,300 tons. Geographically, Central Anatolia, Central West, Eastern Marmara are some of the main area cultivations of Pumpkin in Turkiye.

 

7. Mexico          

Mexico is the seventh biggest producer of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds in 2022. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds reached 729,201 tons.

 

8. Bangladesh  

Bangladesh is the 8th world’s biggest country producer of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds in 2022. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds reached 718,629 tons.


9. Italy 

Italy is the 9th world’s biggest country producer of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds in 2022. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds reached 558,940 tons. Geographically, Mantua province is one of the most important productions of Pumpkin in Italy.


10. Indonesia

Indonesia also has huge production of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds in 2022. Statistically, total production of Pumpkins, Squash, and Gourds from Indonesia reached 552 thousand tons.  Geographically, in Indonesia, Pumpkin production is concentrated in several regions, namely in Java Island with total production of around 270,000 tons/year, Sumatra (94,000 tons/year), and Bali (70,000 tons/year).
