10 World’s Biggest Country Producers of Beer from Barley- According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT) in 2024, there are 10 World’s Biggest Country Producers of Beer from Barley in 2022. Barley (Hordeum vulgare) is one of the most useful crops in the Worlds besides Paddy, wheat, maize, and Soybean. These crops are consumed greatly by humans. Functionally, Barley can be used mostly as animal feed, raw material for making beer, and some components of additional food ingredients.

Biologically, Hordeum vulgare, commonly known as Barley, can be classified into Order: Poales; Family: Poaceae; Subfamily: Pooideae; Genus: Hordeum; Species: H. vulgare. Because of its classifications in biological taxonomy, this crop has close relations with Corn (Zea mays), Paddy (Oryza sativa), Sorghum (sorghum), Wheat (triticum), Bamboo (Bambusoideae) and other species.

 

Statistically, the world’s production of beer has increased gradually. In the year of 1970, the world’s production of beer reached 65 million tons. After more than 50 years, precisely in the year of 2022, the world's production of beer reached 185 million tons. In some regions of the world, Barley can be processed into beer. Commonly, beer is one of the most consumed alcoholic drinks in the world.  Although beer is an alcoholic drink, it has a positive impact on our body. Some of the beneficial impacts of consuming beer to healthy life, namely protecting the human's heart, helping to low bad cholesterol, strengthens the bones, and reduces stress. Commonly, in our daily lives, some of the materials to make the delicious beers comes from cereal crops. The malted barley is the main source of beer raw materials besides corn, wheat, oats, and rice.

Specifically, based on the regions, the Americas region still become the main region of beer production of Barley in 2022 with total production around 63 million tons, Asia is in the second region with production around 55 million tons. Furthermore, Europe is the third biggest producer with production around 51 million tons.  Meanwhile, Africa can produce 14 million tons, and Oceania with production around 1.7 million tons.

1.China, mainland         

China still became the biggest country producer of Barley’s Beer in 2022. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Beer from China reached 35,686,700 tons. Geographically, in China, there are some regions that have huge production of Barley. These regions include Jiangsu, Yunnan, Gansu, Qinghai, Henan, and Nei Mongol.


2.United States of America        

The United States of America still became the second-biggest country producer of Barley’s beer in 2022. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Beer from the United States of America reached 20,451,500 tons. Based on the States in The United States of America (USA), there are some states that have the largest production of Barley. Montana, Idaho, and North Dakota are some of the main regions that have huge production of barley than other states.


3.Brazil

Brazil is the third biggest country producer of Beer from Barley in 2022. Statistically, the production of Beer from Brazil reached 16,363,768 tons. Based on the state’s region in Brazil, there are two main regions that have huge production of Barley in Brazil. These regions include Parana and Rio Grande do Sul.


4.Mexico           

Mexico is the country from the American region that will have a huge production of beer in 2022. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Beer from Mexico reached 13,019,309 tons. Based on the states region in Mexico, there are some main regions that have huge production of Barley in Mexico.  These regions include Guanajuato, Puebla, Mexico, Puebla, Hildalgo, Tlaxcala.


5.Germany        

Germany is the 5th biggest country producer of beer from Barley in 2022. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Beer from Germany reached 8,783,200 tons. Geographically, the Barley production area in Germany concentrated in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, North-Rhine-Westphalia, and Lower Saxony.


6.Russian Federation    

The Russian Federation is the 6th biggest country producer of Beer from Barley in 2022. Geographically, the main area of Barley in Russia concentrated into several regions.  Central, Volga, Southern, Siberia, Northwest, Ural are some of the main regions of Barley Production in Russia. Based on the Kind of Barley, The Spring Barley can be found mostly in Central, Volga, Siberia, and Urals. Meanwhile, Winter barley can be found mostly in North Caucasus and Southern.

Spain is the 7th biggest country producer of Beer from Barley from Europe regions. Statistically, the production of Beer from Spain reached 4,110,000 tons. Geographically, some of the barley cultivation can be found in Spain. Castile and Leon, Castile-La Mancha, Aragon, Catalonia are some regions in Spain of Barley Cultivations. These regions contribute more barley than any other  regions in Spain.


8.Viet Nam

Vietnam is the South-East Asia country that will have a huge production of Beer from Barley in 2022. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Beer from Vietnam reached 3,900,000 tons. As one of the most-consumed beers from the South-Asia region, Vietnam needs more barley from foreign countries. Most imported barley comes from Australia.


9.Poland

Poland is the 9th biggest country producer of Beer from Barley. South Africa basically is the biggest producer of beer from the Africa region. Statistically, the production of Beer from South Africa achieved 3,780,000 tons. The Province of Western Cape still became the main area of Barley cultivation in South Africa. Furthermore, there are some minor areas of barley cultivation in South Africa. These areas include Northern Cape, Northwest, Limpopo, and Free State.

 

10.United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the 10th biggest country producer of Beer from Barley in 2022. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of beer from the United Kingdom reached 3,752,000 tons. In the United Kingdom, some of the barley cultivation areas are concentrated in Scotland, East of England, Southwest, Southeast, East Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber.
