Strawberries, as we know, have become one of the most popular fruits in the world. Its fruits give exceptional taste and contain nutritional substances. Strawberries are annual herbaceous plants that have a short stem, with jagged compound leaves. Historically, the cultivation of strawberries began in Europe where the first garden strawberry was grown in Brittany, France, during the late 18th century. Taxonomically, this plant includes in Subdivision: Angiosperms; Class: Dicotyledonae; Order: Rosales; Family: Rosaceae; Genus: Fragaria and Species: Fragaria vesca L. Because the strawberry belongs to the Rosaceae family, this plant has a close relationship with Apricots (Prunus armeniaca), Rose (Rosa L), Blackberry (Rubus), Cherry (Prunus sub. Cerasus), and Peach (Prunus persica). As of now, the modern strawberry grown broadly by Human is an offspring hybrid of two wild accidental crossing/ hybridization species from the Americas species, namely Fragaria virginiana (The Scarlet Strawberry) from North America and Fragaria chiloense (The Beach/Chilean Strawberry) from South America.

Statistically, from 1961 to 2024, according to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production and harvested areas of strawberries is in the growth positive trend showing increasing in numbers. In 1961, the production of strawberries was just 754 thousand tons with an area harvested around 94 thousand hectares (ha). Meanwhile, in 2024, after more than 60 years, the world’s production of strawberries reached 10.7 million tons (t) with the world's area harvested around 436 thousand hectares (ha). In terms of yield conditions, the yield of strawberries also gradually increased from 8 tons/ hectare (t/ha) to 24.6 tons/ha in the year 2024.

The production of strawberries is still concentrated in Asia with production around 5.2 million tons. Furthermore, Americas and Europe are in the next position with contribution of output reaching 2.68 million tons and 1.7 million tons. 1. China, mainland        

China became the biggest country producing strawberries with production reaching 4.1 million tons in 2024. Genetically, in China, some strawberry varieties planted in China are Hongyan ("Red Face"/ Benihoppe), Zhangji (Akihime), White Strawberries. In terms of Geographical aspects, In China, there are some major provinces of strawberry cultivation, namely Donggang (Liaoning Province), Changfeng (Anhui Province), Yunnan Province. In the field, the production of strawberries derives from two systems i.e., open field (OF) and protected culture (PC). Open Field is a traditional system fully dependent on an open environment meanwhile protecting culture, usually in indoor rooms i.e., Greenhouse or Plant Factory. In China, the peak season of strawberries usually happens around the month of December to February.

 

2. United States of America       

The United States of America became the second biggest of Strawberry Producers. In 2024, the production from this country reaches 1.46 million tons. Geographically, In the United States of America, fresh strawberries production is primarily cultivated in California. These states contribute 90 percent annually and Florida contributes 8 percent. Specifically, in California, the strawberry cultivation and production is concentrated in coastal districts (like Watsonville, Salinas, Santa Maria, and Oxnard). Meanwhile, in Florida, the strawberry production area is located around Plant City (near Tampa). Furthermore, in terms of genetics, In the USA, some varieties of Strawberries planted in the USA are Albion, Monterey, Camino Real, Florida Brilliance and Sweet Sensation.

 

3. Egypt

Egypt is the next 3rd biggest country producer of strawberries and one of the world's largest exporters of frozen strawberries in 2024. Statistically, the production of Egypt’s strawberries reached 880 thousand tons. Statistically, Egypt has around five thousand hectares of strawberry land area for strawberry production. Geographically, the strawberry production area in Egypt concentrated in the fertile governorates of the Nile Delta including Qalyubia, Beheira, Ismailia, and Sharqia. In terms of genetic aspects, some strawberry varieties planted in Egypt are Sweet Sensation, Fortuna, Festival, and Florida.

 

4. Mexico          

Mexico become the 4th world’s biggest country producer strawberry in 2024. Based on the FAO Statistical Database in 2026, the production from this country reaches 696 thousand tons. Meanwhile, around 95% of Mexican strawberry exports are destined for the United States and Canada. Geographically, of all states in Mexico, the main regions of strawberry production in Mexico are located in 4 states (Michoacán, Baja California, Guanajuato, Jalisco) contributing over 99% of Mexico's total strawberry output. Of all states, Michoacán still becomes the primary state with a contribution of around 60% of Mexico's national strawberries. In terms of climatic conditions, Michoacán has a favorable geographical location and mild, temperate climate that is suitable for strawberries cultivation. In terms of genetic aspects, some varieties planted in Mexico are Festival, Monterey, Camino Real.

 

5. Türkiye           

Turkey is the 5th world’s biggest country producer of strawberries in 2024. Accumulatively, the production of strawberries from this country reaches 606 thousand tons. Geographically, in Turkey, the main strawberry cultivating regions in Turkey are spread in several areas, namely Mediterranean (52.1%), Aegean (24.7%), and Marmara (14.6%). In the Mediterranean region, Mersin city has generated 35% of national Türkiye’s strawberries. In terms of genetic aspects, some strawberry varieties planted in the Türkiye are Rubygem, Festival, Albion, Florida Fortuna, amino Real, Camarosa, and Sweet Charlie. Because of climatic conditions, the Peak Season of strawberry production in Türkiye usually begins in late March/April and runs through July.

 

6. Spain

Spain has become a European country that has one of the biggest producers of strawberries. In 2024, the production of strawberries reached 323 thousand tons. Statistically, over 90% of Spain’s production of strawberries takes place in the Huelva region. In terms of genetic conditions, some of the strawberry varieties planted in Spain are Fortuna, Rociera, Florida Pearl, and Victory. Agronomically, the Peak harvesting Season in Spain occurs from March to May.

 

7. Russian Federation   

Russia became the seventh biggest region of strawberry production. In 2024, based on FAO Statistical Database, the production of strawberries reaches 253 thousand tons. Genetically, in this country, some popular strawberries are Komsomolka, Naryadnaya, Pozdnyaya Zagorya, My- sovka), using the best foreign varieties Victoria, Luisa, Sharples, Prenner, Deutch Evern. Geographically, in Russia most of the strawberry production comes from the Southern Federal District including Krasnodar Krai (Kuban), Adygea & Crimea, Kabardino-Balkaria. Furthermore, other regions of strawberries in Russia can be found in the Central Regions (Moscow Oblast and Voronezh). Because of the climatic condition in Russia, the harvesting strawberry peak season usually occurs in May to July.

 

8. Brazil

Brazil is the 8th biggest country producer of strawberries in 2024. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), in 2026, the production of strawberries from Brazil reached 193 thousand tons. Geographically, in this country, the strawberries in Brazil can be found mostly in the state of Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, and Sao Paulo. These regions are called the "Strawberry Triangle" in Brazil and these regions contribute roughly 75% of Brazil's strawberry production. In terms of genetic condition, some of the strawberry varieties planted in Brazil are Albion, Camarosa, and San Andreas. In Brazil, the harvesting peak season of strawberries usually occurs from June to November (Winter/Spring).

 

9. Poland           

Poland is the 8th biggest country of strawberry production in 2024. Based on the FAO Statistical Corporate Database in 2026, the production of strawberries from Poland reached 173 thousand tons. Geographically, the major area of strawberry cultivation is in Mazoeieckie voivodeship, Lebelskie, and Swietokrzyske. statistically, these regions contribute more than two-thirds of national Poland Strawberry. Genetically, some strawberries planted in Poland are Senga Sengana, Kashubian Strawberry (Truskawka Kaszubska), Wild Strawberries (Poziomki). Related to climatic conditions, the peak strawberry season in Poland occurs in Mid-June to early July.

 

10. Republic of Korea      

The Republic of Korea became the 10th biggest country producing strawberries. In the year 2024, the production of strawberries reaches 169 thousand tons. Geographically, the major growing regions in Korea are Gyeongsangnam-do (contributes 34 % of total production) and Chungcheongnam-do (contributes 32%), followed by Jeollanam-do (10 %) and Jeollabuk-do (9%). Specifically, the cities of Jinju and Miryang (in Gyeongsangnam-do), Nonsan (in Chungcheongnam-do), and the county Damyang (in Jeollanam-do) contribute 35 % of Korea’s national strawberry production. Genetically, some main cultivars or varieties of strawberries planted in South Korea are Seolhyang, Maehyang, King’s Berry, Jukhyang. Related to climatic conditions, the peak harvesting time of strawberries in South Korea usually occurs from December to April.
