10 World’s Biggest Country Producers of Wheat- According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), there are 10 World’s Biggest Wheat Producers in 2023. These countries are huge producers of wheat. In 2023, the total harvested area of wheat was around 220 million hectares (ha) with recorded production of around 798 million tons. Statistically, wheat has become one of the most planted crops in the world besides Maize (Zea Mays), Soybean (Glycine max), Paddy (Oryza sativa).

In the last 20 years, from 2000 to 2023, the world’s production of wheat has gradually increased from time to time. In 2000, the production of wheat was just 587 million tons, and it had increased to 798 million tons in the year 2023. from the last 20 years, the growth of production is around 9 tons annually. Meanwhile, the harvested area has relatively slight increase with 215 million hectares (Ha) in 2000 and became 220 million hectares (Ha) in 2023.

Geographically, based on the Region/continents statistics, Wheat has been planted into several regions of the world. Asia, Europe, and America regions are still the biggest main regions of wheat cultivation in 2020. Meanwhile, Asia regions still become the biggest continent in wheat cultivation with output of wheat around 353 million tons, followed by Europe in second place with production around 269 million tons. Furthermore, the production of wheat from America's continent is around 109 million tons. Finally, Oceania and Africa have small production with 41 million tons and 26 million tons, respectively.

1.China- 1st World’s Biggest Wheat Producers in 2023   

China still became the biggest producer of wheat in 2023. Statistically, according to the FAO Statistical Database, the production of wheat from China is around 136,590,100 tons. Geographically, there are some provinces that become the main wheat region of China. These provinces are Henan, Anhui, Shandong, Hebei, Jiangsu, and Xinjiang. Genetically, the Winter and Spring wheat can be found in this country. In China, the production of Winter Wheat can contribute more than 90% of overall nationwide production in China. Spring Wheat just contributes around 5% of Nationwide production.


2.India- 2nd World’s Biggest Wheat Producers in 2023

India is the 2nd biggest country producer of wheat in 2023. According to the FAO Statistical Corporate Database, the production of wheat from Mahatma Gandhi’s country reached 110,553,675 tons. Geographically, the main regions of wheat cultivation in India are in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Gujarat. Basically, most wheat cultivation in India concentrated in the northern region of India. Genetically, there are some popular wheats that are cultivated in India. Russian Federation still becomes the 3rd world’s biggest wheat producers in 2023. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of wheat from Russia reached 91,500,000 tons. Based on the area, the spring wheat cultivation can be mostly found in Siberia, Volga, Urals, and Central provinces. Meanwhile, the winter wheat can be found in Southern, Central, Volga, and North Caucasus. In Russia, Winter Wheat can contribute around 72% of annual production and Spring wheat just contributes around 28%.


4.United States of America- 4th World’s Biggest Wheat Producers in 2023           

The United States of America still become the 4th World’s Biggest Wheat Producers in 2023. Statistically, the production of wheat from the United States of America reached 49,313,930 tons. Based on the geographical area, the winter wheat from the United States of America can be found mostly in Kansas, Washington, Oklahoma, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Texas, Nebraska, and Oregon. Meanwhile, spring wheat can be found mostly in North Dakota, Montana, and Minnesota. In the USA, Winter Wheat still contributes 68% of annual production and Spring wheat just contributes around 32%.


Some Types of Wheat Cultivated in United States of America (USA)


In the United States, there are six primaries cultivated of wheat, namely hard red winter, hard red spring, soft red winter, hard white, soft white, and durum. Specifically, Hard Red Winter Wheat is commonly Grown in the fall and harvested in the spring and summer, and this wheat is known to be used for bread, all-purpose flour, and Asian noodles. Secondly, Hard Red Spring Wheat is cultivated in the spring and harvested in late summer/early fall, known for its high protein content and this is used for hearth breads, rolls, croissants, bagels, and pizza crust. Furthermore, Soft Red Winter Wheat is planted in the fall and harvested in the spring/summer, which has lower protein content than hard red wheat. Functionally, Soft Red Winter is ideal for making cookies, crackers, pastries, and flatbread. Hard White Wheat is known for its milder, sweeter flavor and it is used for whole wheat flour, pan breads, tortillas, and Asian noodles. In addition, Soft White Wheat has a characteristic of Low protein content, high extraction rates and this is usually Used for Suitable for cakes, pastries, Asian-style noodles, and Middle Eastern flatbreads. Australia become the 5th World’s biggest Wheat Producer in 2023. According to the FAO Statistical Corporate Database in 2025, the production of Wheat from Australia reached 41,199,486 million tons. Geographically, in Australia, there are several major areas of wheat cultivation. Some of the main cultivation areas of wheat are Western Australia, New South Wales, and South Australia.

Commonly, Australian Wheat can be classified into three key categories: Premium Hard Wheats, General-Purpose Wheats, and Specialty Wheats. The Premium Hard wheats consist of Australian Prime Hard (APH), Australian Hard (AH), and Australian Premium White (APW). Australian Prime Hard (APH) has High protein milling white wheat ideally suited for high volume European breads, yellow alkaline noodles, fresh ramen noodles, dry noodles, and wonton skins. Furthermore, Australian Hard (AH) is high to mid protein white-grained wheats, ideal for European pan and hearth breads, Middle Eastern style flat breads, yellow alkaline noodles, dry white salted noodles, and steamed products. In addition, Australian Premium White (APW) is Mid protein hard white wheat, to produce a variety of noodle types, including Hokkien, instant and fresh noodles, and Middle Eastern and sub-continental flat breads and Chinese steamed bread. It can also be widely used as a blending of wheat in a range of baking processes internationally and is the mainstay of the domestic baking industry.

In Australia, general-purpose wheat refers to Australian Standard White (ASW) and Australian Premium White (APW), which are versatile and widely used in various food products. Australian Standard White (ASW) is a highly versatile, low protein white wheat representing excellent value for straight milling or blending purposes. This multi-purpose wheat is used to produce Middle Eastern, Indian, and Iranian-style flat breads, European style-breads and rolls, and Chinese steamed bread. Australian Premium White (APW) is a dry, clean, hard-grained white wheat with competitive milling performance and sound falling number. Commonly, it is used for general purpose requirements and for blending by flour millers.

Specialty wheats are Australian Premium Durum (ADR), Australian Soft (ASTF), Australian Innovative Wheat (AIW), Australian Noodle (ANW), Australian Premium Noodle (APWN). Australian Premium Durum (ADR) is used in the production of North African and Middle Eastern products such as couscous, hearth, and flat breads. Australian Soft (ASTF) is suited to make biscuit, cake, pastry, and steamed bun production. Australian Premium Noodle (APWN) is mainly used in an export blend with ANW for a range of white salted and instant noodle types in specific Asian markets. The flour of Australian Noodle (ANW) is used to produce Udon-style noodles.


6.France- 6th World’s Biggest Wheat Producers in 2023 

France is still one of the biggest producers of wheat from Europe. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of wheat from France reached 35,995,570 tons. Geographically, the main area of Wheat cultivation is in Paris Basin.


7.Canada- 7th World’s Biggest Wheat Producers in 2023              

Canada is the next biggest producer of Wheat from America Regions. Statistically, the production of Wheat from Canada reached 31,954,115 tons in 2023. Geographically, based on the geographical area, the winter wheat from Canada can be mostly found in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Manitoba provinces. Germany is the 10th biggest producer from Europe region. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of wheat from Germany reached 21,459,200 tons. Geographically, there are some regions in Germany as the main area of wheat in Germany. Some of the regions are Bayern, Niedersachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
