rambutan fruits in Indonesia. Historically, the rambutan is native to Malaysia
and the name “rambutan” is
derived from the Malay word “rambut”
meaning “hair” referring to
the numerous hairy around the skin (exocarp) of these fruits (Morton, 1987).
Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) is tropical exotic fruits that are found in tropical areas such as Africa, Cambodia, the Caribbean, Central America, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Sri Lanka. Taxonomically, Rambutan can be classified into Subdivision: spermatophytes; Class: Magnoliopsida; Superorder: Rosanae; Order: Sapindales; Family: Sapindaceae; Genus: Nephelium L.; Species: Nephelium lappaceum L. Due to its classification int Sapindaceace family, this tree, rambutan plants, has close relationship with lychee (Litchi chinensis), longan (Dimocarpus longan), pitomba (Talisia esculenta), guinip/mamoncillo (Melicoccus bijugatus), korlan (Nephelium hypoleucum), and ackee (Blighia sapida), guaranĂ¡ (Paullinia cupana), and soapberries.
Commonly, Indonesia is one of the world’s largest country
producers of Rambutan Fruits (Nephelium
lappaceum) and it has spread across in many geographical areas. Many
kinds of rambutans with different tastes and skin-coloured has spread in
Indonesia. Some types of rambutan from Indonesia are Rambutan Binjai, Rambutan
Cimacan, Rambutan Lebak Bulus, Rambutan Si Bongkok, Rambutan si Nyonya,
Rambutan si Batuk Ganal, Rambutan Antalagi, Rambutan Rapiah, Rambutan Narmada,
Rambutan Garuda, Rambutan Kapulasan, Rambutan Brahrang and many more.

Rambutan in Indonesia. According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the production
of Rambutan from Jawa Barat reached 171,069 tons in 2021. Specifically,
in Jawa Barat, some of the main city/ regency that has huge production of
Rambutan are Tasikmalaya, Purwakarta, Ciamis, Subang, And Bogor. Based on
genotype, some of the type of rambutan from Jawa Barat, namely Rambutan Cimacan, Rambutan Kapulasan, Rambutan Walahar, Rambutan
Sukowono, Rambutan Bariah, and rambutan Gula Batu.
2.Jawa Timur (East Java)
Jawa Timur (East Java) also has huge production of rambutan in
2021. Statistically, the production of Rambutan from Jawa Timur (East Java)
reached 123,200 tons. Based on the city/ regency, the production of rambutan in
Jawa Timur mostly can be found in Kediri,
Pasuruan, Jember, Blitar, and Ngawi.
3.Jawa Tengah (Central Java)
Jawa Tengah is the 3rd Indonesia’s biggest
province of rambutan in 2021. According to Statistics Indonesia, the production
of Rambutan from Jawa Tengah reached 121,619 tons. Based on the city/ regency, the production of rambutan in Jawa Tengah
mostly can be found in Karanganyar, Jepara, Banyumas, Batang, Tegal, Semarang,
and Kendal.
4.Riau
Riau is Indonesia's biggest producer of
rambutan from Sumatra Island. Statistically,
the production of Rambutan from Riau reached 40,510 tons. In this
province, rambutan binjai can be found in this province. In Riau province, some
production areas of Rambutan have spread into
Kampar, Indragiri Hulu, and Rokan Hilir. Based on the cultivars, Riau has
popular rambutan and it is called Rambutan
Nona from Kampar.
5.Aceh
Aceh also has a huge production of Rambutan. Basically, this
province can produce 38,813 tons of rambutan in 2021. Basically, Aceh is
well-known as Rambutan Aceh. This
cultivar has been planted and cultivated in
some provinces in Indonesia. Geographically,
in the province of Aceh, some of
the production of rambutan is distributed in Aceh
Besar, Bireuen, Aceh Selatan, and Pidie Jaya.
6.Sumatera Utara (North Sumatera)
Sumatera Utara can produce Rambutan around 34,655 tons in 2021. Geographically, in the province of Sumatera Utara, some of
production of rambutan is distributed mostly in Mandailing Natal, Asahan,
Langkat, Tapanuli Selatan. Based on the genotype, this province has
popular rambutan, namely Rambutan Binjai and Rambutan Brahrang.
7.Sumatera Barat (West Sumatera)
Sumatera Barat also produce rambutan approximately 34,541 tons
according to Statistics Indonesia. Geographically, in the province of Sumatera Barat, some of production of
rambutan is distributed mostly in Pesisir
Selatan, Lima Puluh Kota, Padang City, Agam. Based on genotypes, there
are some rambutan from Sumatera Barat. Some of the types are Rambutan Korong
Dagang / rambutan Udang and Rambutan Gulo-Gulo.
8.Banten
Banten is the Indonesia 8th biggest producer of
Rambutan in 2021. According to Statistics Indonesia, the production of rambutan
from Banten reached 31,396 tons. Based on Genotypes, there are some cultivars
of rambutan from Banten. Some of the types are Rambutan Tangkue and Rambutan Parakan.
9. Sulawesi Selatan (South Sulawesi)
Sulawesi Selatan is the 9th biggest producer of
Rambutan in 2021. According to Statistics of Indonesia, the production of
Rambutan from Sulawesi Selatan reached 28,493 tons. Based on the Geographical
areas, there are Some main growing areas of rambutan in Sulawesi Selatan. These
can be found in Gowa, Pinrang, Luwu,
Bone, Sinjai, Bulukumba, and Luwu Utara.
10. Nusa Tenggara Barat (West Nusa Tenggara)
Nusa Tenggara Barat is next biggest province in Indonesia with
huge production of Rambutan in 2021. According to Statistics Indonesia, the
production of Rambutan from Nusa Tenggara Barat reached 25,074 tons.
Geographically, some main growing areas of rambutan
in Nusa Tenggara Barat are located in Lombok Barat, Lombok Tengah, Lombok
Timur, Bima, and Lombok Utara. Based on the genotype, Rambutan Narmada is
one of the popular rambutan from NTB.
