10 World’s Biggest Country Producers of Buffalo Meat- According to FAO Statistical (FAOSTAT), there are 10 World’s Biggest Country Producers of Buffalo Meat in 2022. Statistically, buffalo meat is one of the most-consumed meat in the world besides Beef, Chicken meat, and pork.  Historically, Buffaloes (Bubalius bubalis) originated from the Indo-Gangetic plains, thrived in Asia and commonly it can be classified into two classes namely riverine buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) and swamp buffaloes (Bubalus carabanesis). Functionally, some of the people still consume this meat because of the nutrition of its meat. Based on the processes, Buffalo meat usually can be used to make some meals in some regions. Some of them are pastarma and gabrovi in Bulgaria, and biltong in Nepal and Brazil. Furthermore, in Asia, buffalo meat can be used as kebabs, koftas and tikkis, bheja, curries, corned meat, and sausages.

Statistically, based on the FAO Statistics (FAOSTAT), the world’s production of buffalo meat is in an upward trend. In the year 1970, the world’s production of buffalo meat reached 1.3 million tons. After more than 50 years, in 2022, it has become 6.9 million tons. During more than 50 years, the production of buffalo meat has increased more than 5.6 tons. The increasing human population and its need to fulfill human consumptions are some of the reasons causing the increasing output of buffalo meat from time to time.

Based on the continent statistics, the production of buffalo meat spread across the regions. Of all regions, Asia still becomes the main production area with production around 6.6 million tons. Furthermore, Africa is in the next position with production of buffalo meat around 197 thousand tons. The Americas and Europe have minor production with output 26 thousand tons and 21 thousand tons, respectively.

1. India

India still becomes the largest country producer of Buffalo meat in 2022. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of buffalo meat from India reached 4,350,000 tons. Geographically, the area of buffalo production in India can be found in several states. Some of the main production areas are Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Punjab. In India, there are many Indigenous buffalo breeds. Some of them are Murrah, Surti, Jaffrabadi, Bhadawari, Nili Ravi, Mehsana, Nagpuri, Toda, Banni, Bargur, Chhattisgarhi, Chilika, Gojri, Kalahandi, Marathwadi, and Pandharpuri.


2.Pakistan         

Pakistan is the 2nd world’s biggest country producer of Buffalo meat in 2022. Statistically, the production of buffalo meat from Pakistan reached 1,185,000 tons. Geographically, in Pakistan, the population of buffalo is distributed mostly in Punjab, Singh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Baluchistan.  Genetically, in Pakistan, some of the types of buffaloes that can be found are Nili-Ravi, Kundhi, Azi-Khaeli.


3.China, mainland         

China also has huge production of Buffalo meat in 2022. Statistically, the production of buffalo meat from Panda country reached 656,429 tons. In China, some buffalo populations are distributed in Guangxi and Yunnan.


4.Egypt

Egypt is the country from the Africa region that has huge production of buffalo meat. According to FAOSTAT, the production of buffalo meat from Egypt reached 197,277 tons. Geographically, in Egypt, buffaloes can be found in several Governorates. Some of them are AL-Behira, AL-Menoufia, AL-Quliubiya, AL-Sharkia, and Kafr EL-Sheikh.  Based on economic contributions, Buffalo production contributes about 24.5% of the agricultural gross domestic products of Egypt.

 

5.Nepal

Nepal is the 5th biggest producer of Buffalo meat in 2022. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of buffalo meat from Nepal reached 194,090 tons. Commonly in Nepal, buffalo are called Bhaisi.


6.Viet Nam        

Vietnam is the 6th world’s biggest country producer of buffalo meat in 2022. According to the FAO Statistical Corporate Database in 2024, the production of buffalo meat from Vietnam reached 65,800 tons. Based on the population of buffalo in Vietnam, many buffalo populations in Vietnam are concentrated in the Northern Mountain, Red River delta, and North Central coast.


7.Philippines    

Philippines is the 7th biggest country producer from South-East Asia. Statistically, the production of buffalo meat from the Philippines reached 65,135 tons. In the Philippines, there are The Carabao buffalo, which is a swamp-type breed of buffalo which is native to the Philippines and considered as the national animal of the Philippines.


8. Myanmar       

Myanmar is the 8th biggest producer in 2022. According to FAOSTAT, the production of buffalo meat from Myanmar reached 27,183 tons.


9. Lao People’s Democratic Republic    

Lao People’s Democratic Republic is the 9th biggest producer of buffalo meat in 2022. Based on the data from FAO Statistics (FAOSTAT), the production of Buffalo meat from Lao People’s Democratic Republic reached 21,710 tons. Geographically, the population of buffaloes in Laos can be found mostly in the Central region.


10. Indonesia

Indonesia also has huge production of Buffalo Meat in 2022. According to FAOSTAT in 2024, the production of Buffalo meat in Indonesia reached 21,120 tons. Geographically, according to the Indonesian Statistics Agency (BPS), the center of buffalo population located in Nusa Tenggara Barat, Nusa Tenggara Timur, Sulawesi Selatan, and Aceh. In Toraja, Indonesia, there is one of the most expensive buffaloes and it is called “tedong bonga”. The price of Tedong Bonga reached billions of rupiah (IDR) and it depends on the patterns of furs in the body of buffaloes.
