10 World’s Biggest Producers of Asparagus- According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database in 2023, there are 10 world’s largest producers of Asparagus in 2021.  These countries commonly have many harvested asparagus and used the production to supply the domestic needs. Functionally, in daily life, asparagus can be added as ingredients to some delicious food. Furthermore, asparagus also contains some nutritional minerals, vitamins A, K, and B6, fibers and others. According to its statistical development, the world’s production of asparagus and harvested areas is in upward trends. It can be seen from the data of FAO Statistical database from 1970 to 2021. In 1970, the world’s harvested areas of asparagus reached 294 thousand hectares and world’s production achieved 1.1 million tons.  After more than 50 years, exactly in the years of 2021, the world’s harvested areas of asparagus had become 1.5 million hectares and World’s production reached 8.5 million tons. Furthermore, the yield / productivity of asparagus also increased from 3.79 tons/ hectare in 1970 to 5.3 tons / hectare in 2021.

Specifically in continental region production, the asparagus production can be found in all regions. But the main cultivation areas of asparagus located in Asia with production asparagus reached 7.4 million tons. Meanwhile, Americas could produce 755 thousand tons and the production of Europe reached 321 thousand tons. Furthermore, the regions of Africa and Oceania still produce in small numbers with output of asparagus was around 10,045 tons and 1,210 tons, respectively.

1. China, mainland        

China became the world’s biggest producer of Asparagus in 2021. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT) in 2023, the production of China reached 7,341,343 tons. Geographically, in China, the main production areas of Asparagus can be found in several province including Shanxi, Shandong, Hebei, Zhejiang, Fujian, and Jiangsu (Zhang & Araki, 2017).

2. Peru 

Peru is the second largest producer of Asparagus In 2021. Statistically, the production of asparagus in Peru achieved 365,123 tons. In Peru, the main producing areas of asparagus located in La Libertad and the other areas but in small production of asparagus can be found in Ancash and Piura (Toledo, 1989).

3. Mexico          

Mexico also had huge production of Asparagus in 2021. According to the data from FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT) in 2023, the production of asparagus from Mexico reached 328,990 tons. Geographically, in Mexico, the asparagus production areas located in Baja California, Sonora, and Guanajuato state (Nigh, 1996).

4. Germany       

Germany is the 4th largest producer of asparagus in 2021. Statistically, the production of Asparagus in 2021 reached 119,270 tons. Geographically, in Germany, the main production areas of asparagus located in Lower Saxony, with output reaching 25,300 tons, North Rhine-Westphalia (20,300 tons), and Brandenburg (18,700 tons).

5. Spain             

Spain is the 5th largest producer of asparagus in 2021. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of asparagus reached 62,170 tons. Geographically, in Spain, the main production areas of Asparagus located in Andalusia.

6. Italy 

Italy could produce asparagus around 45,720 tons in 2021 according to FAOSTAT. Geographically, in Italy, the production areas of Asparagus can be found in region Puglia in the province of Foggia, province of Varese, Province of Treviso, Province of Vicenza, Bologna, and other areas.

7. United States of America       

The United States of America becomes the 7th largest producer of asparagus in 2021. Statistically, the production of Asparagus from United States of America (USA) reached 27,524 tons. Geographically, in the USA, the main producing states of asparagus spread across California, Washington, Michigan, and New Jersey

8. Japan             

Japan is the 8th largest producer of Asparagus in 2021. According to FAOSTAT, the production of asparagus from Japan reached 27,061 tons. Geographically, in Japan, the main production areas of Asparagus located in Hokkaido Prefecture.

9. France           

France is the 9th largest producer of Asparagus in 2021. Statistically, the production of Asparagus from France reached 25,810 tons. Geographically, in France, the asparagus production areas located in Loire Valley, the South-West, South-East and Alsace. Genetically, one of the most popular varieties of asparagus is Argenteuil.

10. Iran (Islamic Republic of)     

Iran also became one of the largest producers of Asparagus in 2021. Statistically, the production of Asparagus from Iran reached 21,846 tons.
