Brief Description of 12 World’s Most Produced Nuts
1.Coconuts
Coconuts still became the
world’s most produced nuts in 2024. According to FAO Statistical Corporate
Database (FAOSTAT) in 2026, the world’s production of coconuts reached 65,543,721 tons with harvested areas
around 11,208,376 hectares (ha). Coconuts are obtained from coconut plants, and
it was called Cocos nucifera in biological name. This plant belongs to a
member of the palm tree family (Arecaceae). Culturally, some people in
Asia called the coconut trees as “tree of life.” Specifically, the coconuts themselves,
including its endosperm parts (coconut meat) can be eaten when in immature
coconut conditions and the coconut water can be drunk too. Furthermore, coconut
can be processed into some derivatives products including coconut oil, coconut
flour, coconut vinegar, and others.
Statistically, based on the data of FAOSTAT in 2026, coconut can be found mostly in Asia regions. There are some countries with huge production of coconuts and Some of them are Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Brazil, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, Myanmar.
2.Peanuts /Groundnuts
Peanuts / groundnuts are
the second most produced nuts in 2024. Statistically, the world’s production of
peanuts / groundnuts reached 57,563,381 tons with world’s harvested areas reached 31,160,155
hectares (ha). The groundnuts / peanuts (Arachis hipogea), plant species
belonging to Family of Fabaceae, are native to South America and nowadays this
plant can be found in many countries. Nutritionally, nuts basically are rich in
proteins and many people fond of this nut. Functionally, the endosperm /
kernels of groundnuts can be eaten after boiling them, or processed into some
derivatives products including peanut oil, peanut butter, peanut flour, and
others.
Statistically, according
to FAOSTAT in 2026, the production of peanuts can be found in several regions
but there are 10 world’s largest country producers of ground nuts/ peanuts in
2024. These countries include China, India, Nigeria, USA, Sudan, Senegal,
Myanmar, Argentina, and others.
3. Walnut
Statistically, the world’s production of walnuts in 2024 achieved 4,349,163 tons with world’s harvested areas around 1,399,757 hectares. The walnut was popular with the name of “royal nut” at Byzantine era. Commonly, it is the edible seed of the tree of the genus Juglans, belonging to Juglandaceae family based on the plant taxonomy. Nowadays, there are three species of walnuts which are commonly grown in the world. These species include Persian/ English walnut (Juglands regia), black walnut (Juglands nigra), and the Japanese walnut / heartnut (Juglans ailantifolia). Functionally, walnuts can be used as ingredients of some dishes including walnut soup, walnut pie, walnut coffee cake, banana cake, brownie, fudge. areas achieved 2,400,263 hectares. The almond plant (Prunus amygdalus)
originally come from Iran and its surrounding regions. Nowadays, almond nuts
can be eaten raw or toasted. These nuts were also added into a component of
various dishes. In addition, in the food industries, almond nuts can be
processed into some products including almond paste, almond butter, almond
milk, almond flour, almond oil, and others.

chestnuts, Asian chestnut, and European chestnut. American chestnuts include
species of Castanea dentata, Castanea pumila, Castanea ozarkensis,
Castanea Chrysophylla. Meanwhile, Asian chestnuts are Castanea
mollissima, Castanea henryi, Castanea seguinii, Castanea crenata.

harvested areas of pistachios reached 1,089,880 hectares. the pistachio plant (Pistacia
vera) is believed to comes from regions of Central Asia in the vicinity of
Iran and Afghanistan. The nuts of pistachios can be eaten fresh or roasted and
salted. Furthermore, it can be processed into some derivatives products
including pistachio ice cream, pistachio paste, pistachio salad, pistachio

Database (FAOSTAT) in 2026, the world’s production of hazelnuts in 2024
reached 1,212,126 tons with
harvested areas reached 1,108,901 hectares. Hazelnuts plants are deciduous plants
from the genus of Corylus. Functionally, Hazelnuts can be used as a snack food
(baking and desserts), breakfast cereals, and as mixture in making chocolates.

countries with huge production of hazelnuts in 2024. These countries include Türkiye,
Italy, United States of America, Azerbaijan, Chile, Georgia, China, mainland,

9. Shea nuts/ Karite nuts

the world’s production of Shea nuts achieved 830,410 tons with world’s
harvested areas around 681,914 hectares. The Shea trees (Vitellaria paradoxa)
is the tree from the family of Sapotaceae. The she trees can be found mostly in
Africa regions. Functionally, the nuts of shea trees can be used for food and
medicinal purposes. Statistically, according to FAO Statistical Corporate
Database (FAOSTAT), there are some countries with huge production of shea
trees. Some of them are Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin, Ghana, Cote

10. Tung nuts
The world’s production of
Tungnuts in 2024 reached 420,217 tons with world’s harvested areas of tung nuts
reached 158,093 hectares. The tung tree (Vernicia fordii) is the trees
which is included in the Euphorbiaceae family, and this plant is believed come
from southern China, Myanmar, and northern Vietnam. tung nut is toxic to humans
and animals and consuming even this seed can be fatal to human's health. Functionally,
the tung nut is grown almost exclusively for the valuable oil extracted from
its seeds, known as tung oil or China wood oil. Statistically, according to

including China, Paraguay, Argentina, Malawi, Madagascar, and Brazil.
11. Kola nuts
Kola nuts are one of the
most produced nuts in 2024. According to FAOSTAT, the world’s production of
kola nuts reached 317,143
tons with world’s harvested areas achieved 546,758 hectares. The kola nut is
the fruit of the kola tree (Cola genus), primarily the species of Cola
acuminata and Cola nitida. Taxonomically this genus still belongs to the mallow
family (Malvaceae), so it has close relatives of cocoa (chocolate), okra, and
hibiscus. The kola nut is commonly bitter flavor and contains caffeine. Basically,
these nuts can be used as medicine and added into some flavored
beverages.
12. Brazil nuts
Statistically, the world’s
production of Brazil nuts reached 79,735 tons. The plant of Brazil nut (Bertholletia
excelsa), a plant species belonging to It belongs to the Lecythidaceae
family, is believed to come from Guianas, Venezuela, Brazil, eastern Colombia,
eastern Peru, and eastern Bolivia. Functionally, Brazil nuts can be processed
into Brazil nut oil. Statistically, according to FAO Statistical Corporate
Database (FAOSTAT) in 2026, Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru are some countries which
has huge production of Brazil Nuts.
