In 1961, the harvested areas of orange plants were 1.26 million hectares, with the world’s orange production at 15.9 million tons. Based on the FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of Asia and America reached 21.6 million tons and 27.6 million tons, respectively. Meanwhile, Africa and Europe are in the next position with production of around 11.3 million tons and 5.9 million tons, respectively.

1. Brazil

Brazil become the world’s biggest country producer of orange. In 2024, according to the FAO Corporate Statistical Database, the production of orange fruits from Samba‘s country reached 15.68 million tons. Geographically, there are some specific place or states as the main areas of orange fruits production. These areas include São Paulo, Triângulo Mineiro and West-Southwest Minas Gerais Citrus Belt. Based on the genetic variations, there are some varieties that are mostly cultivated in Brazil. Some of them are Hamlin, Westin, Rubi, Valencia Americana, Seleta, Pineapple, Pera Rio, Valencia, Valencia Folha Murcha, and Natal.

Economically, in this country, the company has a bigger role in the production and maintaining export markets. These popular companies with lead the export the orange market from Brazil include Citrosuco SA Agroindústria, Sucocitrico Cutrale Ltda, and Louis Dreyfus Commodities Brasil SA.

 

2. China, mainland         

China was the 2nd world’s biggest orange country producer in 2024. Statistically, the production of China’s orange reached 7.6 million tons. Geographically, there are some provinces in China with the biggest production of Orange fruits. These provinces are Jiangxi Sichuan, Chongqing, and Guangxi. In this country, genetically, some of the oranges from China are Kinno, Swatow, Ponkan, Lukan, and Dekopon. 3. Mexico           

Mexico is the third biggest of orange production in the world. Statistically, the production of Mexico orange reached 4.8 million tons in 2024. In this country, geographically, there are some states of orange production. These states are Veracruz is the leading state for growing oranges with the production of more than two million metric tons a year. This state contributes about 51% of Mexico’s total orange production. Other states where orange growing are Tamaulipas (13% of national production), San Luis Potosí (10%), Puebla (6.2%), Nuevo León (4.9%) and Sonora (4.1%).

 

4. Egypt

Egypt is an African Country with the biggest production of Orange in the world. Statistically, the production of Orange from Egypt reached 4.2 million tons. Geographically, in Egypt, there are some places of orange production. The main production areas are the Behera governorate, Qalyoubia governorate, Ismailia governorate, Sharkia governorate, Menoufia governorate, and Nubaria district. Genetically, there are some popular citruses cultivated in Egypt, namely orange, mandarin, lime, lemon, grapefruit, sour orange, kumquat, shadouk, pummelo, and citron. Statistically, the main varieties of orange fruits cultivated in Egypt  are Navel orange and Valencia orange followed by Mandarin varieties, lemon, Balady orange, although other species, such as Grapefruit, sour orange, and Kumquat.

 

5. India

India is the 5th biggest country producer orange fruits in the world. In 2024, the production of Orange from this country reaches 3.85 million tons. Statistically, the total cultivated land of orange in the country reaches 4.79 lakh hectares (479 thousand hectares). Major states of orange cultivation area locate in Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and the Haryana States. In Mahatma Gandhi’s country, genetically, there are some popular orange varieties cultivated in India. These are Nagpur Santra, Coorg Santra, Khasi Santra, Mudkhed, Shringar, Butwal, Dancy, Kara (Abohar), SZ-IN-COM, Darjeeling Mandarin, Sumithra mandarin, Seedless-182, and Kinnow mandarin.

 

6. Spain

Spain is the European country which has the bigger production of Orange fruits than any other European nations. In 2024, the production of Orange in Spain reached 2.9 million tons. Geographically, the orange production stretched along the Mediterranean regions and the islands in Spain. Andalucía and Valencia are the main regions of citrus production. Both had a volume production of this citrus fruit of over 1.5 million metric tons in that year. Based on Statista data in 2023, the production of Andalusia’s orange reached 1.6 million tons, followed by Valencia with 1.5 million tons, and Murcia with 123 thousand tons.

 

7. Indonesia      

Indonesia is the 7th biggest country producer of orange fruits which produce 2.57 million tons of orange fruits in 2024. East Java (Jawa Timur) still become the main province of orange fruits in Indonesia with production reaching 700 thousand tons, followed by North Sumatra (Sumatera Utara), Sumatera Barat (West Sumatera), Riau, Kalimantan Selatan, dan Kalimantan Barat. Genetically, there are some popular oranges fruits cultivated in Indonesia, namely Pontianak, Berastagi Orange (Medan), Mandarin Orange, and Sunkist Orange.

 

8. United States of America        

The United States of America is the 8th world’s biggest country producer of orange fruits. Statistically, in 2024, the production of orange fruits reached 2.5 million tons. Geographically, there are some states in the USA which has big contribution of orange fruit to USA’s fruit production. California contributes 54 percent of the total United States citrus production, followed by Florida with the total contribution of 42 percent to national orange, Texas and Arizona produced contributes 4 percent. Genetically, in the USA, there are some popular varieties of Orange cultivated in the USA. These varieties include Valencia, Navel, Clementine, Cara Cara Orange, Blood, Bitter, Bergamot, Lima.


9. Iran (the Islamic Republic of)

Iran is the ninth biggest country of orange production. Statistically, the production of orange reached 2.22 million tons. Geographically, the Northern Iranian Province of Mazandaran still become the major area for the cultivation of citrus fruits in Iran.

 

10. Vietnam

Vietnam also has huge production of orange fruit. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT) in 2026, the production of orange fruits in Vietnam reached 1.91 million tons. Until 2018, total areas of oranges orchad reached up to 120.8 thousand hectares. According to Vietnam Statistics in 2021, the main production areas of orange in Vietnam can be found in Vin Long with production around 644 thousand tons, followed by Tuyen Quang with production of around 108 thousand tons, and Hoa Binh with production of around 100 thousand tons.
